THE FIRST COMMERCIAL GPRS  CONNECTION IN GEORGIA

On July 26, 2001 MagtiCom announced the news of a successful completion of the first General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) call within its wireless network, using Motorola's and Cisco's end-to-end solution.

GPRS is a means of high-speed data exchange for GSM users. Today the technology is considered an interim link in migrating to the 3G system.

MagtiCom, an unchallenged leader in the mobile communications market of Georgia in terms of the number of subscribers, service quality and introduction of the latest technologies, was the first in the Caucasus region to introduce GPRS.

During the presentation held at the Sheraton Metechi Palace on July 26, the MagtiCom representatives announced that the GPRS trial would soon be followed by the commercial launch of the service.

The Company started its search for potential users of GPRS.

Several big organizations expressed their desire to start using the new technology.

The Bank of Georgia, whose business relations with MagtiCom are long-standing, was chosen as the first partner. Experts of MagtiCom and Motorola studied the demands of the Bank of Georgia, relevant technical characteristics of the network operation and made trials in many regional directions.

As a result, on January 30, 2002 the commercial service based on Motorola's unique GPRS technology was launched for a regional office of the Bank of Georgia.

“The biggest branch office of the Bank of Georgia located in Gurjaani, is already linked with the head office via the GPRS-based data exchange channel. MagtiCom experts and the Automation Service staff of the Bank of Georgia work closely on the continued improvement of technical specifications and increasing the reliability of the channel. If everything goes on as planned, the full reservation of the corporate computer network of the Bank of Georgia on GPRS-basis will soon be carried out. This will increase the reliability of corporate computer system of the Bank and help further improve customer service”, says Zurab Akhalaya, Deputy Director of the Bank of Georgia joint stock company.

The tradition is carried on: MagtiCom remains the leader in the introduction of the latest technologies. The Company is vigorously pursuing the plan to migrate to the 3G technology. The Bank of Georgia has become the first commercial user of GPRS.
