Karl Marx, who suggested, albeit unsuccessfully, that
Nikoladze should head the First International in the
South Caucasus. France was followed by Switzerland:
“I am very curious about Switzerland. How come this
land, poor in resources, is so rich, and why Georgia,
a country abounding in resources and mountains,
is so poor.” In 1868, Niko defended his thesis
titled Disarmament and Its Economic and Social
Consequences, for which he received a doctoral
degree from the University of Zurich. He was the first
Georgian to receive this academic honor in Europe.
Toward the end of 1869, Niko Nikoladze returned
to Georgia and set out to promulgate education,
supporting others in this cause as his goal all the
while. Word has it that, in 1872, he whisked away his
sisters: Olympiada and Eprosine, also his future wife,
Oliko Guramishvili, and two cousins – all dressed as
young men – and sent them to Switzerland on a ship,
to receive education…. All this happened way before
the LinkedIn era, when Western education was a
rarity and a major luxury, especially for women.
